Travel writers share UK holiday experiences, from Thames rowing to Scottish cycling

Two travel writers have recounted their memorable UK holidays, including a week-long rowing trip from Oxford to London and a gravel biking break in the Trossachs.

  • One writer spent a week in June 2013 rowing from Oxford to London with two friends.
  • Another writer visited Aberfoyle in the Trossachs for a gravel biking holiday.

Marcel Theroux described a week-long rowing trip from Oxford to London in June 2013 with two friends, James and Tom. They hired a 26ft, 130-year-old mahogany skiff, Ewen, from Thames Skiff Hire. The 80-mile journey downstream involved navigating locks and dealing with blustery and wet weather, particularly on the second day between Abingdon and Day's Lock.

The trip included visits to riverside pubs, brewing tea on islands, and passing historical sites like Medmenham Abbey and Monkey Island. The final destination was Walton-on-Thames, but the group extended their journey to Hampton Court before returning the boat.

Another travel writer detailed a birthday break in Aberfoyle, known as "Gravelfoyle," in the Trossachs, approximately 50 miles north-west of Edinburgh. The trip involved gravel biking on routes such as the 18.2-mile (29.2km) Lomond View, and hiking the 3.5-mile (5.3km) circular Bracklinn Falls route near Callander. Accommodation was a glamping pod on the Cardross Estate near Port of Menteith.
