Tributes have been pouring in for Barbara Mullaney, a pillar of her Cricklade community who left an indelible mark on its pet-loving residents. As news of her passing spread following a fatal car crash on Tuesday, the town's shops and homes are now adorned with heartfelt tributes to the owner of popular pet shop Animal Fayre.
A 43-year-old man has been taken into custody by Wiltshire Police on suspicion of murder in connection with the collision, which also left a teenage passenger seriously injured. The victim, Ms Mullaney, was driving an orange Peugeot 107 when it collided with a black Vauxhall Astra travelling north on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Cricklade's community, where many have spoken of their love and admiration for Ms Mullaney. St Sampsons Church described her as "a beacon of kindness and care" to both pet owners and animals alike, while the local dog walking business Purton Pet Pals shared memories of her constant smile and engaging stories.
The collision occurred at approximately 6:05 PM BST on Tuesday between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain. Initially, police had arrested the Vauxhall driver on suspicion of causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs, but this has since been upgraded to a murder investigation following further inquiries.
Wiltshire Police have also referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous interactions with the suspect in the days leading up to the fatal collision. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker has extended his sympathies to Ms Mullaney's family, who are receiving support from specially-trained officers as they navigate this devastating time.
In a statement, DCI Walker urged anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area or nearby high streets to come forward and assist with their ongoing investigation. He reassured the public that there is no wider risk associated with the incident.
