Tropical Storm Bertha is currently swirling in the US Gulf and poses a significant threat of heavy rainfall and a "life-threatening storm surge" to the country's south-east, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). As of Monday, the storm was situated approximately 105 miles (165km) south of Panama City, Florida, carrying sustained wind speeds of 40mph (65 km/h).
Forecasters from the Miami-based NHC indicate that Bertha will track near or along the northern Gulf coast over the coming days. The storm's westward drift towards Texas could trigger widespread flooding and storm surges across Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Some affected regions could see as much as 8 inches (20cm) of rain by Friday, with the potential for "isolated" tornadoes to develop in Florida.
An updated bulletin issued on Monday evening suggested that Tropical Storm Bertha may gain strength over the next few days, with a potential landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, anticipated by Wednesday. The bulletin also noted that tropical storm-force winds extend outwards 70 miles from the storm's centre, and Bertha is currently moving north-west at approximately 3mph.
A tropical storm watch is now in effect, spanning from the Ochlockonee River in Florida westward to the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish border in Louisiana. Officials have warned that storm surges are expected to reach between 1-4ft along sections of the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines, with a high risk of flash flooding in urban areas. In New Orleans, residents are being advised to clear local storm drains, and sandbags are being distributed to help mitigate potential floodwaters.
The arrival of Bertha coincides with a period of intense summer heat across the US south. Looking ahead, Bertha is forecast to weaken back to a tropical depression by Thursday and may dissipate entirely by the end of the week as it approaches the Texas coast. This marks the second named storm of the current season, following Tropical Storm Arthur which caused some flooding in the US last month.
