Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has publicly defended his decision to miss Canada's opening match at the FIFA World Cup, opting instead to attend the USA's inaugural game in Los Angeles where his girlfriend, pop superstar Katy Perry, was performing. The 54-year-old politician faced a wave of criticism after prioritising Perry's headline act over his nation's fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday.
Addressing the backlash on social media platform X on Sunday, Mr Trudeau posted: "Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup," accompanied by a Canadian flag emoji. Perry's performance was a central part of the Los Angeles opening ceremony, marking the first World Cup match held in the United States since 1994. She performed her hit song "Wonder" before Team USA went on to secure a 4-1 victory against Paraguay, getting their campaign off to a strong start.
Other notable performers at the US ceremony included Tyla, rapper Future, Brazilian singer Anitta, and Blackpink’s Lisa. Meanwhile, Canada's own World Cup opening ceremony, held in Toronto, featured performances from Canadian music icons Michael Buble and Alanis Morrisette, providing a distinct national flavour for their fans.
Mr Trudeau and Perry's relationship first became the subject of rumour in July 2025, with confirmation following in December of the same year. This relationship emerged after Mr Trudeau concluded his nine-year tenure as Canada’s prime minister, stepping down as Liberal Party leader in January 2025. He was previously married to broadcaster Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years, a marriage that ended in 2023, and they share three children.
Katy Perry, known for her global hits such as "I Kissed A Girl" and "Roar," has a significant presence in the UK music charts, achieving five number-one singles and two number-one albums. She was previously married to English comedian Russell Brand and later engaged to actor Orlando Bloom, with whom she has a daughter, Daisy Dove, before their separation was announced last July.
