A commemorative $1 coin featuring Donald Trump's portrait has been launched by the US Mint. The coin, which also includes the words "In God we trust," celebrates America's 250th anniversary.

This marks the first instance of a living president appearing on American currency in a century. The US Mint stated the special-edition money captures "the spirit, pride, and legacy of a nation approaching its landmark anniversary."

Federal law generally bars the printing of US money with the image of a living person. However, the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, from Trump's first term, prohibits portraits of living people on the reverse of coins but does not explicitly cover the obverse, where Trump's likeness appears.

The coins, priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100, were "not currently in stock" on the US Mint's website within hours of going on sale.

Why this matters: The issuance of a coin featuring a living president is a notable event given existing federal laws and historical precedent.
