US President Donald Trump has announced that the US government will send a one-time $90 payment to more than 20 million Americans enrolled in Medicare. The health insurance programme for elderly people will see these payments issued to help offset the cost of monthly medical insurance premiums.
President Trump stated on social media late on Friday that the funds would originate from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which he said Congress had allocated $2bn to improve the Medicare fee-for-service programme.
The White House has released details of the plan, indicating that most eligible seniors will receive the $90 payment as a direct deposit in early October. Those without direct deposit will receive a check, also sent in early October, to their registered Medicare mailing address.
