Donald Trump has approved the execution of Nidal Hasan by US army firing squad, according to chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell. Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009.
Parnell stated on X that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution, which President Trump then approved. Hasan, an army psychiatrist, would be the first US soldier to be executed by the US military in more than 60 years.
Hasan opened fire on 5 November 2009 at a medical facility at the Fort Hood base. He was shot and partially paralysed by a civilian police officer during the attack. During his trial, Hasan chose to conduct his own defence, called no witnesses, and gave no testimony, making no attempt to deny the charges.
