  • Events intended as non-partisan were reportedly converted into Trump-backed rallies.
  • Sponsorship packages offered access to Trump, with prices starting at $500,000.

A recent congressional investigation has put former US President Donald Trump's administration under scrutiny, alleging a systematic 'hijacking' of the upcoming 250th-anniversary celebrations of the United States. An interim report, titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People Out of Their 250th Birthday,” claims that the elaborate plans for the 2026 commemoration were diverted to serve Trump's 'political ideology and pet projects', rather than remaining a non-partisan national event.

The report, produced by Democratic staff of the House of Representatives’ natural resources committee’s oversight and investigations subcommittee, details a web of alleged corruption, wire fraud, and 'pay-to-play' schemes. It suggests that a 'shadow corporation' named Freedom 250, embedded within the National Park Foundation (NPF), was instrumental in orchestrating these activities. This entity reportedly operated with the NPF's non-partisan credibility and tax-exempt status, while allegedly circumventing standard government transparency regulations.

Originally, Congress established the US semiquincentennial commission in 2016, operating as the non-profit America250 Foundation, with a mandate to plan the celebrations on a non-partisan basis. However, the report alleges that the Trump White House launched a sustained campaign to subsume this commission. When America250 leadership resisted demands to shift focus towards partisan, campaign-style spectacles, the administration reportedly created Freedom 250 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the congressionally chartered NPF.

According to the document, the White House secured control of the NPF board, installing key campaign operatives. This move allegedly provided an opaque vehicle to raise and spend money in service of the President’s agenda. Congressman Jared Huffman, a California Democrat on the natural resources committee, expressed strong concerns, stating he couldn't recall anything similar to this 'hijacking' of a trusted charity for a 'craven political agenda' aimed at enriching Trump and his associates.

Further allegations include Freedom 250 surreptitiously diverting resources intended for America250, leaving the latter struggling for funds. Fundraisers, including Meredith O’Rourke, are accused of misleading prospective America250 donors by providing them with Freedom 250’s banking details instead. The report suggests this could constitute wire fraud and charitable solicitation fraud under federal law. The deceit reportedly extended to the entertainment industry, with artists like Martina McBride and Young MC being assured events were non-partisan, only to face backlash when they were revealed as Trump-backed rallies.

The investigation also points to sponsorship packages, starting at $500,000 and reaching over $10 million, which allegedly offered tiered recognition culminating in a 'historic photo opportunity' with Trump. An example highlighted is a massive Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event hosted on the White House South Lawn to celebrate the president’s 80th birthday, heavily sponsored by corporations facing federal regulation and utilising extensive government resources for security. The report implies these actions blurred the lines between national commemoration, political campaigning, and personal enrichment.
