Last week, Donald Trump suggested in an interview with British TV channel GB News that he might not help the UK if Argentina tried to seize the Falkland Islands. This comment has been described as a new low for UK-US relations.
The former US President reportedly linked his remarks to disappointment with the UK's initial reluctance to support the Iran war, which was launched on 28 February by Israel and the United States.
Following Trump's comments, Argentina's President Javier Milei, whose popularity was approximately 37% in July, delivered a speech hinting that the US would back Argentina if it renewed its territorial ambitions. Milei also referred to the UK as a nation "in decline".
Earlier this week, the UK's announcement of sanctions on Israeli settlers reportedly resulted in a strong reaction from the Trump administration and threats from Israel to recognise Argentinean sovereignty in the Falklands.
A 2013 referendum on the Falkland Islands saw 99.8% of islanders vote to remain connected to the UK, with over 90% voter turnout.
