US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for further protections for artificial intelligence, suggesting the technology should be renamed "super intelligence" to lessen anxieties. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Mr Trump stated that AI has the potential to be bigger than the Industrial Revolution or the internet, and its use should be actively encouraged rather than curtailed.
Mr Trump's comments follow Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's address to the UN general assembly, where he urged for further safeguards against AI. Mr Albanese emphasised that "retaining sovereignty must have a digital dimension" and highlighted risks including the exploitation of children, the potential for biological weapons, and the loss of control of AI systems.
Mr Albanese also promoted Australia's digital safety reforms, which legally empower parents regarding teen social media use and opt-out algorithms. He had previously joined more than 20 other world leaders in signing a declaration advocating for human control over rapidly evolving AI technology.
