England manager Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Alex Scott's impressive performance in his first international start has created significant competition for Declan Rice's midfield spot. Scott delivered an outstanding display during England's 7-0 away victory against Croatia.
Rice, who had neural pain in his upper hamstring during the World Cup, withdrew from the camp for load management. His absence at the start of the Nations League campaign allowed Tuchel to explore options, with Scott partnering Elliot Anderson in midfield.
Tuchel praised Scott's performance, which was described as full of energy, speed, and quality. He also stated, "We will not survive on two central midfielders. The more the better – and it’s always about the guys who are in camp."
Scott, 23, earned his second cap against Croatia, having also impressed after coming on against Czechia. He and Anderson, who previously played together in the Under-21 European Championship-winning side, dominated against Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic.
