England manager Thomas Tuchel has publicly defended his squad selection strategy, specifically his choices for full-back positions, following the confirmation that Reece James will be unavailable for Saturday's World Cup fixture against Panama. The Chelsea right-back has been sidelined with a hamstring issue, prompting questions about the depth of England's defensive options in the tournament.
James underwent medical assessment earlier in the week after experiencing discomfort following England's goalless draw against Ghana. Tuchel has since confirmed that the 26-year-old has not travelled with the squad to New Jersey from their Kansas City base for the final Group L game. While the manager expressed confidence that James could still feature in the knockout stages, reports suggest he remains a significant doubt for the initial last-32 matches, despite England already securing their progression.
This latest injury to James, who endured a season plagued by fitness issues, adds to an existing concern regarding full-back cover. Tino Livramento, another specialist full-back, had previously returned home from the United States with a calf problem. These setbacks have intensified scrutiny of Tuchel's decision to include only three recognised full-backs – Djed Spence, James, and Livramento – in the World Cup squad, notably omitting players like Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Despite the challenges, Tuchel maintained that he is satisfied with his squad's composition and the characteristics of the players available. He highlighted Ezri Konsa's ability to play at a high level in the right-back position as an alternative. Other potential options include central defenders Jarell Quansah and Konsa, as well as Nico O'Reilly, who played left-back for Manchester City but is primarily a midfielder, and Dan Burn, a centre-back who has also featured at left-back.
The manager remained optimistic about James's prognosis, describing it as a minor hamstring issue and confirming an accelerated rehabilitation programme is underway. He stated, "We strongly believe that he will be available [during the tournament]." In more positive news for the squad, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson are all confirmed to be available for the upcoming match against Panama, with Saka ready to start after managing an Achilles tendinitis complaint.
