England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a message of confidence and accountability to supporters, stressing the need to regain trust following the team's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. Despite the disappointment of the 2-1 loss, England bounced back decisively to secure third place in Miami, beating France 6-4 in a high-scoring play-off match. This bronze medal marks the nation's best men's World Cup performance since their historic triumph in 1966.
The inquest into Wednesday's agonising semi-final has been intense, with criticism directed at Tuchel's tactical approach after England took an early lead. The manager has openly accepted responsibility for the decisions made during the game. "Whatever happened in these 30 minutes against Argentina, or maybe 45 minutes in the second half, where we became too passive, why it happened, whatever happened in the last 10 minutes, we were close," Tuchel stated, acknowledging the pain of the defeat. "It's my job to take decisions. My interventions, my substitutions. The change of structure did not have the effect I wanted to, so I have to live with this."
Tuchel, however, remains resolute in his belief that the team's overall progress in the tournament outweighs the setback. "I strongly believe we built more in this World Cup than we can lose in 30 minutes, and me personally in a decision that turns out not to be effective," he asserted. The manager highlighted the impressive resilience shown by his players in the humid conditions of Miami, where they overcame the heartbreak of the semi-final to secure a memorable victory against France.
Looking ahead, Tuchel's focus is firmly on the upcoming home European Championships. He emphasised the continuous need to earn and maintain the trust of the fanbase. "In the end, we need to win the trust on not a daily basis in international football but in seven, eight weeks. We're back together. It's Nations League, we need to gain the trust and rebuild the trust," he explained. The England squad will open their Nations League campaign in late September, facing Spain.
The manager also reflected on the contrasting reactions to the semi-final loss and the third-place victory. "The press conference (on Friday) felt as if we went out in group stage without a win, to be very honest, and 24 hours later we have the biggest success in 60 years," he commented. Tuchel concluded by praising his team's reaction on the pitch, stating, "The best thing you can do is react on the pitch and get the next win. Everything else is just talking, and talking doesn't get you points and wins. So, you have to endure it, hold it, be strong and keep believing. I am glad we showed the reaction. We wanted that reaction and it is very impressive."
