Twitch has confirmed that users can now prevent Amazon from using their content to train generative artificial intelligence (AI) models. The streaming platform stated that users can opt out of a default setting that allowed Amazon to utilise streams, clips, images, chats, and other channel content.
The announcement on Wednesday confirmed that Amazon, which acquired Twitch in 2014, was using the platform's content for AI training. This revelation prompted significant criticism from users.
Mike Minton, Twitch's chief product officer, explained during a stream that AI training collection was turned on by default, similar to most content services. He added that Twitch is "respecting" users' wishes to opt out. Mary Kish, head of community at Twitch, provided a tutorial on how to disable generative AI training through channel settings.
It is not clear when Amazon began collecting Twitch users' data for AI training. Mr Minton stated he did not know if user data had already been used for training or what Amazon had used.
