Rachel Morgan reports on the tragic case of an eight-week-old baby who tragically died in October 2023, leading to two individuals being charged with murder and multiple other serious offences.
The charges against Liam Neve, 26, from Grimoldby, Louth, and Lauren Murgatroyd, 26, from Morecambe, stem from an incident in October last year when police were called to a property in Bourne, Lincolnshire. Despite the baby being taken to hospital, they sadly passed away. The charges of murder against both defendants are accompanied by a series of other serious allegations, including assault, making false statements concerning birth, and causing or allowing the death or harm of a child.
Specifically, Liam Neve faces four counts of assault, making a false statement concerning birth, causing or allowing the death of a child, and two counts of causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm. Lauren Murgatroyd is similarly charged with two counts of assault, making a false statement concerning birth, causing or allowing the death of a child, and two counts of causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm.
Following their court appearance, both defendants were remanded into custody pending further proceedings. A provisional trial date has been set for June 2027, with a subsequent hearing scheduled for 16 September. The investigation into the baby's tragic death has been ongoing since 2023, described by Detective Chief Inspector Andy McWatt of Lincolnshire Police as 'complex and large-scale', which has now reached the stage where charges have been brought against two individuals.
The protracted nature of this case highlights the intricacies involved in such investigations. As the judicial process unfolds, the significance of the charges against Neve and Murgatroyd cannot be overstated, given their gravity and the devastating impact on the community affected by this tragic event.
