Two candidates with the name Dan Sullivan are set to appear on the November ballot for the US Senate in Alaska, election officials confirmed on Tuesday. This development adds a notable element to what is anticipated to be a closely contested midterm race.
The incumbent, Republican Senator Dan S Sullivan, is seeking a third term. He will be joined on the ballot by Dan J Sullivan, a retired school teacher and former US Forest Service employee, who is also running as a Republican.
The incumbent senator has condemned Dan J Sullivan, claiming he is running at the behest of Democrats to confuse supporters and split votes. Alaska's election officials had previously disqualified Dan J Sullivan in June, but the state supreme court ordered his reinstatement.
In last week's primary, Senator Sullivan received almost 43% of the vote, while Dan J Sullivan secured 2.5%. Alaska employs ranked-choice voting for general elections for congressional offices.
