A devastating multi-vehicle crash on Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York, has left two people dead and 20 others injured. The tragedy unfolded at around 11:45 PM local time on Monday night when a westbound coach bus collided with another vehicle near the Greenpoint Avenue and Hunters Point Avenue exit.
The impact triggered a series of pile-ups involving four additional vehicles, including one that caused the bus to flip over the central median and into oncoming eastbound traffic. The bus driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, while the identities of those who lost their lives remain withheld pending notification of their families.
One driver from another vehicle involved in the crash was rushed to hospital in critical condition, while three other drivers are reported to be stable. All passengers on the coach bus, numbering approximately 20 people, were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with most listed as stable. A total of 79 fire and emergency service personnel responded to the scene, leading to the closure of all lanes on both eastbound and westbound Long Island Expressway at 50th Street.
As investigations continue into the cause of the collision, authorities are expected to examine factors such as vehicle maintenance, driver conduct, road conditions, and adherence to safety regulations. The findings will likely have significant implications for transportation safety policies in future.
