Two Latvian men have been bailed after being arrested following a security breach at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire. The Metropolitan Police stated that the men, aged 36 and 32, who live in the UK, were bailed with "strict conditions".
Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) security patrols at the base identified an abandoned vehicle at approximately 22:00 BST on Wednesday. A small breach in the fence was subsequently found, and the two men were arrested inside the perimeter a few hours later.
The men were initially arrested on suspicion of trespass on a prohibited site and criminal damage. They were later arrested on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK under Section 4 of the National Security Act. Counter Terrorism Policing London is investigating the incident.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said that while there is heightened interest around military sites, there is nothing in the investigation so far to suggest a connection to events at RAF Fairford last week. She added that a key line of inquiry is to identify any potential motivation, including whether it may be connected to criminal activity.
RAF Molesworth is used by the US military and Nato for intelligence operations, housing US intelligence operations centres for Europe and Africa, as well as a Nato intelligence hub.
