Two 17-year-olds accused of subjecting a teenage girl to an hours-long sexual assault in Sydney have been granted bail. The alleged incident took place on the night of 16 August, a children's court heard on Friday.
The pair are among three 17-year-olds facing charges. The alleged instigator, who faces 11 offences including six counts of aggravated sexual assault in company, did not apply for bail and remains in juvenile detention.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Rhonda Riley alleged that the instigator messaged a friend to join the alleged attack, and then invited another boy via text message. One of the co-accused is charged with six counts of sexual assault in company and common assault, while the other faces two counts of aggravated sexual assault in company.
Children's court judge Jeff Tunks described the alleged attack as a "degrading" and "humiliating" ordeal with "elements of menace." However, he granted bail to the two co-accused, stating that risks could be mitigated with strict conditions, including daily reporting to police and home detention. Their cases are due to return to court in October.
