Recent figures from the Department for Communities (DfC) show that approximately two-thirds of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) cases in Northern Ireland that reach a tribunal appeal are decided in favour of the claimant. For the 2025/26 period, 64% of such cases were overturned.
The overall success rate for tribunals in 2026/27 is currently 69.9%. This rate rises to 72.3% if the claimant attends in person and has representation.
PIP is designed to assist individuals under state pension age with long-term illnesses or disabilities who require help with daily activities or mobility. The maximum weekly payment for PIP is £194.60. More than 230,000 people in Northern Ireland claimed PIP as of 31 May.
The DfC acknowledges that applying for PIP can be challenging and states its commitment to treating claimants with dignity, respect, and empathy. An independent review of PIP by the UK government is currently underway, with the Disability Minister, Sir Stephen Timms, stating an interim review found PIP to be "not fit for purpose."
