British heavyweight boxing star Tyson Fury has surprised many by weighing in significantly lighter than his opponent, Mariusz Wach, ahead of their bout in Pattaya, Thailand, this Friday. Tipping the scales at 18st 13lb (120kg), Fury was 26lb lighter than the veteran Pole, who registered 20st 11lb (132kg). This marks a rare occasion in Fury's extensive career, being only the fourth time he has weighed less than his opponent, and the first in 15 years since his initial fight against Derek Chisora in 2011. He was also lighter than John McDermott and Daniil Peretyatko during his more than 17 years and 38 professional fights in the ring.
The 37-year-old former heavyweight champion, who was 3lb lighter than his last outing against Arslanbek Makhmudov in April, declared, "I'm Mr Slim now. I'm delighted to be here and there are fans here from all over the world." Fury appeared in good spirits at the weigh-in, sporting a designer robe and a large cross chain, joking and laughing with Wach during their face-off before posing for photographs. The fight, set to take place in front of approximately 1,500 fans, will not be broadcast by a major television network.
For Fury, this fight represents an opportunity to maintain activity and momentum. He stated, "I want to keep busy. I'm not banking on any fight that may or may not happen. This is the year I want Tyson Fury to stay busy. I may even have 10 fights this year." He added, "I've had one fight in two years. I want to box his head off for 10 rounds ideally, but if it goes off earlier then that is ideal."
His opponent, 46-year-old Mariusz Wach, enters the ring with a less formidable recent record, having lost seven of his past 10 fights. This includes a knockout defeat by Moses Itauma two years ago. Despite Wach's experience, the prevailing expectation is a victory for Fury, which would be a crucial step towards securing a highly anticipated showdown with fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua.
Joshua is also scheduled for his own warm-up bout against Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, indicating both fighters are preparing for a potential future clash that has long been sought by boxing fans.
