UEFA has declared a boycott of FIFA competitions as Gianni Infantino continues with plans to privatise the World Cup. This extraordinary action was confirmed after an emergency meeting of UEFA's 55 member associations on Thursday, with European football reportedly "standing as one" against the proposals.
Concacaf, representing North, Central American, and Caribbean football with 41 members, has also rejected the proposal, expressing "deep concerns about the lack of due process." While Concacaf did not join the boycott, it is understood that the majority of its members have lost confidence in Infantino's presidency.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), comprising 47 members, has stated it "stands in solidarity with Uefa and Concacaf" regarding "serious concerns" over FIFA's proposal. The AFC president, Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, criticised FIFA's approach as "unacceptable" and called for an urgent review of its governance.
FIFA has confirmed it will continue its consultation period ahead of a vote scheduled for 19 September. For the proposals to pass, a majority of FIFA's 211 member associations must vote in favour, and the FIFA High Council must give its backing.
