UFC president Dana White has announced that the organisation will assess Tom Aspinall's status as heavyweight champion. The British fighter is nearing a full year out of action following an eye injury sustained in October 2025.
Aspinall, 33, suffered a rare eye condition and persistent double vision after repeated eye pokes from Ciryl Gane in his first title defence, which ended in a no-contest. He subsequently underwent surgery for the injury.
White confirmed that discussions about Aspinall's title would take place, stating, "We'll definitely be talking about that." He added, "I don't know personally where he is health-wise. We should clear that up soon." This follows UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko vacating her title earlier this month due to persistent injuries.
In June, Aspinall had indicated he had returned to full training for a rematch with Gane, suggesting a September fight. He later rejected speculation in late August that he would leave the UFC. Gane, who won the interim heavyweight title against Alex Pereira in June, has also called for a rematch with Aspinall.
