The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is at the forefront of developing advanced drone technology and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities designed to enhance the effectiveness of the British Army on future battlefields. This critical work, undertaken in collaboration with industry partners and international allies, addresses the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare, where uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) can significantly impact operations and threaten forces, as evidenced by recent conflicts.
A key initiative, Project VANAHEIM, is a joint UK-US effort specifically focused on countering drone threats and safeguarding troops. Led by the Army’s RAPSTONE initiative, Project VANAHEIM involves a series of experiments that integrate counter-drone technology with light infantry units. These trials, which included assessments in realistic conditions in Germany and Poland during summer 2025, aim to identify effective solutions and accelerate their adoption across the British Army. Dstl collaborated with 13 industry suppliers, the Army Trials Unit, the Joint Effects Trials and Development Group, Soldierworks, and US partners on this project. Further testing of the system is planned for Lithuania in summer 2026 under the US Project FLYTRAP.
Separately, Dstl, in partnership with the British Army, has delivered the initial soldier-led development of Computer Vision Models through Project ANVIL. This innovative system helps drones find and identify targets with enhanced flexibility and accuracy. Computer vision, leveraging AI and machine learning, allows machines to interpret images and video data. ANVIL operates in conjunction with the FALLING INSTRUMENTS Ground Control Station (FIGS) as part of an Initial Experimentation System (IES), enabling rapid identification of new targets and adaptation to changing conditions in search and reconnaissance missions within 24 hours.
The integration of ANVIL significantly accelerates model retraining and deployment, thereby reducing the mental effort required from operators and saving valuable time. Building on technology derived from AUKUS Resilient Autonomy and AI Technologies (RAAIT), ANVIL has evolved from a conceptual stage into a rugged, deployable system. The IES is now being deployed with three Army units to familiarise personnel with battlefield computer vision, marking a crucial step in the UK's broader efforts to develop advanced swarming UAS capabilities.
These developments underscore the UK Government's commitment to modernising its defence capabilities in response to contemporary threats. The ongoing collaboration between Dstl, the British Army, industry, and international partners is vital for ensuring that UK forces are equipped with the most advanced technologies to maintain a strategic advantage on the global stage. The lessons learned and technologies developed through projects like VANAHEIM and ANVIL will directly inform future tactics, training protocols, and equipment decisions for the British Army.
