His Majesty's Ambassador to Montenegro, Nerys Jones, delivered a speech at the 2026 Berlin Process Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Sveti Stefan on 1 October 2026. Ambassador Jones highlighted the importance of security, stability, and prosperity in the Western Balkans, stating these are inseparable from Europe as a whole.
The Ambassador noted that the region's security is being tested, referencing the Prime Minister's recent remarks in New York about overcoming division and instability. The UK is supporting the Western Balkans Cyber Capacity Centre in Montenegro and working with regional partners to counter foreign information manipulation and interference. Practical cooperation on migration and organised crime, including through the Berlin Process Border Police Chiefs’ Forum, was also emphasised.
Ambassador Jones also spoke about the need for convergence, focusing on robust and sustainable economic growth. The UK's export credit agency has increased its risk appetite for the region, aiming to support multinational coalitions and projects. The UK also welcomes efforts to link energy markets and has shared its experience on Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms with Western Balkans partners.
Finally, the Ambassador stressed the importance of young people seeing their European future, which includes jobs, economic opportunities, and societies where all can participate fully. She encouraged the full implementation of relevant European Conventions and Directives on combatting violence against women and girls, an area the UK made a priority last year.
