The UK and Florida have joined forces in a £300,000 space innovation fund, marking a significant milestone in their burgeoning partnership. This joint venture aims to bring groundbreaking ideas from concept to commercial reality by strengthening ties between organisations and researchers across both regions.
The new fund is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the UK Government and Space Florida at the Farnborough International Airshow, building on an existing MoU on trade concluded in November 2023. This partnership has identified space as a priority area for bilateral cooperation, with the shared goal of driving innovation and commercialisation.
The fund, established by the UK Space Agency's International Bilateral Fund (IBF) and Space Florida's International Aerospace Innovation Fund (IAIF), will focus on key areas such as space transportation, advanced satellite systems, in-space research, cutting-edge exploration technologies, and in-orbit servicing and manufacturing. These sectors have been identified as having significant potential for breakthrough results through joint UK-Florida efforts.
Project proposals must involve at least one UK-based entity and one Florida-based partner, demonstrating clear commercialisation potential. The initiative is designed to open up the US market for British companies and researchers, while also tapping into Florida's expertise in space technology and innovation.
Rebecca Evernden, Director of the UK Space Agency, hailed the partnership as a major step forward for the UK's ambitious space sector plans. "International collaboration is at the heart of our vision," she said. "By working together with Space Florida, we can unlock new opportunities for British companies and researchers to drive innovation and shape the future of space capabilities."
Rob Long, President and CEO of Space Florida, echoed Evernden's sentiments, highlighting Florida's position as a launch point for global aerospace ambitions. He expressed confidence that the partnership would create an environment conducive to innovation through strategic collaboration.
