The UK and Greece have taken a significant step towards boosting their tourism industries with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in London. This historic agreement, signed by Tourism Ministers Stephanie Peacock and Olga Kefalogianni, aims to strengthen cooperation between the two nations and pave the way for increased collaboration in areas such as sustainable tourism and digitalisation.
The five-year MoU outlines eight key areas of collaboration, including joint promotion efforts, investment opportunities, vocational training, and a focus on 'special interest' tourism. This encompasses film, culture, gastronomy, and rural experiences like mountain and hiking tourism, designed to give British holidaymakers the best experience in Greece.
One of the main objectives is to diversify tourism offerings in both countries, capitalising on their shared rich history, stunning landscapes, and amazing coastlines. The agreement also commits both nations to sharing information and best practices on sustainable tourism, aiming to minimise the environmental impact of visitors.
The UK is Greece's largest tourist market, with over five million British holidaymakers visiting each year. Meanwhile, the number of Greek visitors to the UK has been steadily increasing since the pandemic. The MoU seeks to build on this strong relationship by promoting investment opportunities and hosting tourism events in both countries.
UK Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock expressed confidence that the agreement would 'strengthen our cooperation and support sustainable growth across both our tourism sectors.' Greek Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni hailed the MoU as an 'important step in deepening our strategic partnership in tourism' and an 'investment in the future of both our tourism sectors.'
