The Prime Minister today held discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The talks focused on strengthening the UK-Japan partnership, with an emphasis on closer trade cooperation aimed at driving growth and creating opportunities in both countries.
Regarding defence, the Prime Minister expressed an ambition for the UK, Japan, and Italy to continue strengthening defence security through GCAP. Both leaders acknowledged Canada's new role as the first observer in the initiative.
The Prime Minister also thanked Prime Minister Takaichi for Japan's continued support against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the need for further pressure on Russia. Additionally, the leaders discussed challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of their nations working together to support security and stability there.
The Prime Minister commended Hiroshi Suzuki, the Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, for his contributions to deepening the relationship between the two countries. Both leaders expressed their anticipation of speaking again soon.
