Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced today that the UK government is implementing a new package of measures aimed at pressuring the Israeli government. These steps include a ban on trade in goods with illegal settlements in Palestine.
The UK government has also formally declared, for the first time, that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful. This position is independent of, but aligns with, the conclusion of the International Court of Justice.
Furthermore, sanctions will be applied to individuals and companies that support, facilitate, or profit from illegal settlements. This includes businesses and investors involved in the construction of the E1 mega settlement, which the Prime Minister stated would undermine the prospect of a two-state solution.
The Prime Minister condemned the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel and Hamas, but stated these actions do not justify the Israeli government's actions in Gaza or the West Bank. He also announced a new package of humanitarian aid for Gaza.
