The resolution comes at a critical time, as journalists, media workers, human rights defenders, and civil society actors face escalating threats globally. Ambassador Sanders welcomed the strengthened language within the resolution, specifically citing provisions on the safety of journalists, efforts to combat impunity, measures against transnational repression, and the tackling of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs). These elements aim to ensure that individuals can carry out their essential work without fear for their safety or freedom.
A key focus of the resolution, and one particularly welcomed by the UK, is its strong recognition of the persistent barriers women and girls encounter in exercising their right to freedom of opinion and expression. The updated language on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, digital inequalities, and the imperative of women's and girls' full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation both online and offline was underscored as especially significant.
