British berry growers have seen a significant increase in their harvest this year, with volumes up 6% compared to 2025's already large crop. This comes despite a summer that has presented challenges including heatwaves, wildfires, and water shortages, according to British Berry Growers (BBG).
The trade body noted that volumes of blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries have been particularly strong. Most UK berry crops are grown under polytunnels with drip irrigation, which has helped to insulate them from the hot conditions.
However, not all berry crops have fared as well. Late season strawberry production is anticipated to be slower than hoped in early autumn, as plants may be exhausted from heavy cropping during the heatwave. Blackcurrant production is also expected to decrease by 10%.
Nick Marston, chair of the BBG, stated that British growers have invested millions of pounds over many years to improve resilience, including developing secure water supplies and efficient drip irrigation systems. He also mentioned that the hot weather could reduce fruit size as berries ripen sooner, but the industry had a good start to the season.
