The Met Office has delivered a definitive forecast for the coming days, confirming that the UK will not see a return to the recent scorching temperatures this week. Instead, the nation should prepare for a period of cooler, more unsettled weather, with widespread showers and potentially heavy rain affecting many areas.
Forecasters indicate that temperatures across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will remain below the average for late July. While parts of the country experienced highs exceeding 30°C earlier in the month, the current outlook suggests a significant shift, with daily maximums unlikely to climb much above the low 20s Celsius in the warmest southern regions, and considerably cooler further north.
Regional breakdowns show a varied picture, though uniformly cooler than recent weeks. In England, particularly the South West and parts of the Midlands, residents can expect intermittent showers, some of which could be heavy, with temperatures generally ranging from 17°C to 20°C. Northern England and Scotland are forecast to see more persistent rain and stronger winds, potentially gusting up to 30 mph in exposed coastal areas, with temperatures struggling to reach 15°C to 18°C.
Wales is also set for a wet and breezy period, with the Met Office issuing yellow warnings for rain in some western areas, where localised flooding could be a risk. Temperatures across Wales are expected to hover around 16°C to 19°C. Northern Ireland will mirror much of Scotland's forecast, with frequent showers and cooler conditions, with highs typically between 15°C and 17°C.
The change in weather patterns is attributed to a shift in the jet stream, which is now directing Atlantic low-pressure systems across the UK. This contrasts sharply with the high-pressure systems that brought the recent heatwave. The Met Office advises the public to be prepared for typical British summer weather, meaning layers and waterproofs rather than sun cream and shorts, for at least the remainder of this week.
Looking slightly further ahead, there is currently no indication of the hot weather returning in the immediate future, with forecasters suggesting that the unsettled pattern is likely to persist into early August. This means any outdoor plans should account for the cooler temperatures and increased chance of rain, particularly for those planning staycations or outdoor events.
