The UK is bracing itself for its hottest spell in years, with temperatures set to soar to a sizzling 36°C in some regions. The Met Office has sounded the alarm, issuing an amber health alert across nine counties in England's South East, where vulnerable residents are at risk of heat-related illness.
These hotspots include Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and parts of West Sussex. Residents in these areas are being advised to take extra precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
While temperatures will be less severe across the rest of the UK, Wales can expect highs of low 30s, particularly in the south-east, while Northern Ireland will bask in warm conditions with mid-20s temperatures. Scotland's central belt and southern regions will see lows to mid-20s.
The Met Office is urging everyone to take the heat seriously, recommending light, loose-fitting clothing and avoiding peak sun hours (11 AM - 3 PM). Light breezes of around 5-10 mph are expected, but will offer little respite from the sweltering temperatures. Health officials are warning people to be aware of heatstroke and exhaustion symptoms and seek medical help if necessary.
The heatwave is forecast to last several days, with a review expected towards the end of the week. Public health officials are urging everyone to take precautions to stay safe in the heat.
