The UK is bracing itself for a scorching heatwave this weekend, with some areas set to sizzle at temperatures hotter than Barbados. Heat health alerts are already in place across various regions as forecasters predict highs of 33C (91.4F) early next week.
Temperatures will steadily climb from Saturday onwards, reaching their peak by Monday and Tuesday. London and the South East are set to feel the worst of it, with a high probability of exceeding 30C. In contrast, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will see warmer weather than recent weeks but remain a few degrees cooler.
The elevated temperatures pose significant health risks for vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has activated heat-health alerts, advising the public to take proactive measures such as staying hydrated, seeking shade during peak hours, wearing light-coloured clothing, and applying high-factor sunscreen.
Regional specifics reveal that parts of the South West of England, including Bristol and Bath, could see temperatures reach 28-30C by Monday. The Midlands will experience high 20s, while Scotland and Northern Ireland will hover around 22-25C in most populated areas. Wales is forecast to see similar conditions, with Cardiff potentially reaching 26-28C.
The Met Office attributes this impending heatwave to a ridge of high pressure building across the UK, drawing in warm air from the continent. The exact duration of the heatwave remains uncertain but current forecasts suggest peak heat will last for several days before temperatures return to seasonal levels towards the middle or end of next week.
