The UK is bracing itself for a sweltering new heatwave, with potentially scorching temperatures of up to 31C forecasted in parts of the country next week – a stark contrast to the cooler weather that has recently gripped the nation. The Met Office warns of a significant warming trend developing over the coming days, with the mercury set to peak towards the end of next week.
According to Met Office data, southern and central England, particularly the South East and Midlands, are expected to bear the brunt of the heat, with areas like London and surrounding counties likely to see temperatures soar. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will also experience a rise in temperatures, but are unlikely to reach the same heights as their English counterparts – instead reaching mid-20s Celsius in many areas.
The Met Office advises the public to take precautions against the heat, recommending that people stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day (11 am - 3 pm), and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Those with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, and young children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heat and should take extra precautions.
No official heat health warnings have been issued yet, but the public is encouraged to monitor Met Office updates regularly. The forecast suggests a period of stable, warm weather rather than extreme peaks, although the cumulative effect of sustained high temperatures can still pose health risks if not managed properly. Light winds are expected, which could make the heat feel even more intense.
