The UK is bracing itself for a sizzling third heatwave of 2024, with forecasters predicting temperatures could soar as high as 34C in some areas. The latest spell of hot weather will primarily affect central and southern England, but other regions including Wales, parts of Scotland, and Northern Ireland are also expected to experience unseasonably warm conditions.
The Met Office has issued yellow and amber heat health alerts for several regions, warning of a heightened risk to health for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Temperatures in England are likely to peak, but Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland can still expect highs in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius.
Public health authorities urge residents to take precautions: stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day (11 am-3 pm), and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. It's also crucial to check on neighbours and relatives who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Pet owners are advised to ensure their animals have access to shade and fresh water, and avoid walking dogs on hot pavements. The third heatwave of 2024 follows two previous intense heatwaves earlier in the year, highlighting concerns about climate change's impact on UK weather patterns.
