The UK is bracing for its third major heatwave of the year, with forecasters predicting temperatures could reach a sizzling 35C in some areas by mid-week. The Met Office has issued warnings that while the heat will persist for several days, a change in weather patterns is expected to bring an end to the intense heat by the weekend.
Health experts are on high alert, with a Level 3 Heat-Health Alert currently in place for London, the South East, and parts of the East of England. This warning signals a significant risk to health, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Regionally, central and southern England are expected to bear the brunt of the heat, with temperatures reaching as high as 35C in some areas. In contrast, Scotland and Northern Ireland will experience slightly cooler conditions, typically ranging from low to mid-20s Celsius. Wales is also predicted to see warm weather, with temperatures potentially reaching the high 20s Celsius in some parts.
The Met Office attributes this heatwave to a persistent ridge of high pressure drawing warm air from the continent across the UK. However, meteorologists predict that a shift in the synoptic situation – possibly involving Atlantic air masses or a breakdown of the high-pressure system – will lead to a more unsettled and cooler outlook by Saturday and Sunday.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 11 am and 3 pm), and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Checking on vulnerable neighbours and family members is also crucial. The prolonged nature of this heat event highlights the importance of adhering to public health guidance to ensure safety and well-being across the population.
