US-based cloud computing company DigitalOcean Holdings Inc has filed a Form 4 document with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing reveals that DigitalOcean continues to expand its presence in Europe, despite ongoing concerns about data protection and competition in the market.
The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has been scrutinising cloud computing services from non-EU providers, raising questions about their compliance with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
While DigitalOcean claims to have a robust data management policy, some experts warn that its expansion into Europe could create risks for UK businesses.
'The issue is not just about where the servers are located, but also about who has access to the data and how it's being used,' said Dr. Emma Taylor, a leading expert on data protection law. 'If you're using a cloud computing service that's based outside the EU, you need to be aware of the potential risks.'
DigitalOcean's expansion into Europe is also raising concerns about competition in the cloud computing market. The company competes with major players such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
