The United Kingdom has stated its readiness to collaborate with the UN to ensure peacekeeping operations remain adaptable and effective in addressing future challenges. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on 18 September 2026, Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, welcomed the Secretary-General’s Review of UN peacekeeping operations.
Ambassador Foster outlined three key areas: the primacy of politics, building focused and adaptable missions, and ensuring missions have the necessary tools. She emphasised that peacekeeping operations are most effective when supporting a clear political strategy with realistic objectives and credible exit strategies.
The UK also supports the Review's focus on creating more focused and high-performing peace operations, which should concentrate on tasks they are uniquely positioned to deliver. Additionally, Ambassador Foster stressed the importance of equipping missions with the technologies, capabilities, and training required to operate safely and effectively, particularly in navigating complex information environments and countering misinformation.
