The United Kingdom has condemned in the strongest terms today's Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, stating that they are 'reckless and entirely unacceptable'. The attacks threaten regional security, risk further escalation, and undermine efforts to secure peace in Yemen.
The UK, alongside the US, France, and Bahrain, called for an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council in support of Yemen's sovereignty and regional security.
UK Chargé d'Affaires to the UN, Ambassador Kate Foster, reaffirmed the UK's support for Saudi Arabia's security and sovereignty, and expressed concern over reports of Iranian aircraft landing in Yemen without permission.
The UK believes these actions constitute a clear breach of Yemen's sovereignty and a violation of international law. The country is urging further examination of these allegations and calling on all parties to cooperate fully with UN efforts.
Foster also condemned recent Iranian attacks across the region, including on Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Jordan, as well as commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK urges all parties to refrain from further escalation and return to diplomacy.
With Yemen already enduring more than a decade of conflict, the UK remains committed to working with Council members, regional partners, and the Government of Yemen to support de-escalation, uphold relevant Security Council resolutions, and advance a durable political settlement.
