The United Kingdom has unequivocally condemned the Houthis' recent escalation in Yemen, stating that the offensive has intensified the conflict and increased civilian suffering. Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a statement at the UN Security Council meeting on Yemen, highlighting the Houthis' siege of civilians in Taiz City and threats to vital supply routes.
The statement noted that since fighting intensified in September, 479 civilians have been killed or injured, and more than 200,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. UNICEF reports that 300 primary healthcare clinics have been affected, restricting access to care, including nutrition and vaccination support. The UK extended condolences to Saudi Arabia for attacks against Abha and King Khalid International airports and reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's right to defend its security.
The UK continues to support the humanitarian response with a $137 million commitment this year. The statement also called for the immediate release of all UN, NGO, civil society, and diplomatic mission personnel held by the Houthis, and for full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access. The UK urged the Houthis to de-escalate and return to diplomacy, emphasising that there is no military solution to the conflict.
