A UK government spokesperson has condemned recent actions by the Tigray Defence Forces in northern Ethiopia. The condemnation specifically addresses attacks in Afar and southern Tigray, alongside the takeover of airports in Tigray following the removal of federal authorities.
The UK government is urging all parties involved to avoid further escalation, warning that the renewed conflict could have severe consequences for people across the region, particularly women and girls. They have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue, mediated by the African Union.
Furthermore, the UK rejects the stated aim of the Alliance for Survival coalition to overthrow Ethiopia's government. All sides are urged to pursue a peaceful political solution through dialogue. The statement also emphasised the need to protect civilians, ensure access to basic services and life-saving aid for those affected, and allow safe, unhindered humanitarian access while protecting aid workers.
