The seismic shockwaves that have ravaged Venezuela this week have sent ripples across the globe, prompting an urgent response from the UK. In a demonstration of its unwavering commitment to international humanitarian aid, the British government has dispatched a £2 million support package and a 68-strong search and rescue team to assist in the relief efforts.
A highly experienced UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR) team, consisting of 14 Fire and Rescue Services' personnel and six specialist dogs, embarked on a Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft from RAF Brize Norton today. This expert unit has previously played a pivotal role in responding to disasters in Türkiye and Morocco in 2023. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, including drones capable of surveying structural damage, the team will work tirelessly to locate those trapped beneath the rubble and direct rescue operations safely.
At the same time, members of the UK's humanitarian field team are making their way to Venezuela, comprising specialists in supply chain management, human resources, and security. Their mission is to ensure a seamless coordination and delivery of aid from Britain, thereby maximising its impact on those affected by the disaster.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the Venezuelan people, stating that "the UK stands in solidarity with all those affected" and reaffirming the government's dedication to working closely with international partners to provide critical assistance as swiftly as possible. He also paid tribute to those who have lost their lives, homes, or livelihoods.
Building on this aid package, a team from the UK Emergency Medical Team (UK EMT) is being sent ahead to assess the urgent health needs in Venezuela. Their findings will inform any subsequent medical deployments and contribute to international coordination efforts, ensuring that the critical care requirements of those affected are met without delay.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has reaffirmed the UK's commitment to supporting humanitarian aid efforts, stating that "our specialist search and rescue teams are deploying to save lives" while also providing a £2 million support package for the humanitarian response. As part of Britain's National Resilience capability, the UK ISAR team remains on permanent standby, poised to respond at short notice to countries devastated by natural disasters.
