The United Kingdom has expressed deep concern over the human rights situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly in the eastern region. Eleanor Sanders, the UK's Human Rights Ambassador, delivered a statement at the UN Human Rights Council's 63rd session, highlighting ongoing issues.
The UK is alarmed by continued reports of unlawful killings, conflict-related sexual violence, the recruitment and use of children, arbitrary detention, and attacks against schools, healthcare facilities, and civilian infrastructure. The findings of UN investigations reportedly underline the gravity of the situation for civilians in eastern DRC.
Specific concerns include the impact of the conflict on women and children, the continued displacement of millions of people, and the resulting obstacles to humanitarian assistance. The UK also noted concern regarding continued transmissions of Ebola, which is exacerbating vulnerabilities among conflict-affected populations and straining health services.
The UK reiterated its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC and called on all parties to comply with international human rights law and international humanitarian law. The statement also emphasised that those responsible for violations and abuses must be held accountable.
