The UK is set to sizzle in one of its most severe heatwaves on record, with temperatures forecast to hit 40°C or higher in some areas. The Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning for large parts of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, urging people to take immediate action to protect themselves from the extreme heat.
According to the Met Office, temperatures will be at least 1-2°C above average for this time of year, with every part of the country affected. The organisation has warned that the intense heat could lead to 'exceptional' conditions, including heat exhaustion and dehydration, which can have devastating consequences for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.
In England, the red weather warning is in place from 11am on Thursday until 9pm on Friday, while in Scotland it will be in effect from 1pm on Thursday until 10pm on Saturday. Wales and Northern Ireland have also been affected by the warning, which will remain in place until further notice.
The Met Office has advised people to stay cool, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Those most at risk are being urged to take extra precautions, including keeping out of direct sunlight and staying hydrated throughout the day.
