UK Fans Overlooking World Cup in New Jersey Amid High Prices and Limited Options

The 2026 FIFA World Cup in New Jersey is expected to draw large crowds, but so far, demand for accommodations seems to be lagging due to high prices and limited affordable options.

  • High prices and limited affordable options deter fans from booking World Cup accommodations in New Jersey
  • Demand for rooms and parking spots appears to be lower than expected, with occupancy rates ranging from 8% to 30%
  • Ticket prices, soaring airfare costs, and a lack of affordable lodging options contribute to the low demand

The 2026 FIFA World Cup in New Jersey is just around the corner, but it seems that many fans are giving the event a miss. Days before the tournament kicks off, demand for accommodations is reportedly low, with occupancy rates ranging from 8% to 30% for group stage matches.

The World of Blue hotel, which has invested $100 million to transform into a luxury destination for the World Cup, is charging soccer fans $450 to park on the night of the final, with a room costing around $2,300. However, this is about seven times the normal price, and it seems that many fans are not willing to pay the premium.

A combination of factors, including astronomical ticket prices, soaring airfare costs, and a lack of affordable lodging options, is contributing to the low demand. As a result, hotels are having to drop their prices for group stage matches, with some offering rooms for as low as $500 on the night of the final.

Chris Andraka, a 36-year-old director of operations, had planned to stay at Marriott's SpringHill Suites, but changed his plans when he saw the prices had increased from $300 to $5,300. 'Nothing to write home about,' he said of the hotel's amenities.

While some fans may opt to stay in New York City, where they can enjoy the city's nightlife and restaurant scene, even there, the crowds may fall short of expectations, with only 28% of hotel rooms booked for the night of the final, compared to 40% a year earlier.

Why this matters: The low demand for World Cup accommodations in New Jersey may have implications for the local economy and the overall success of the tournament.

What this means for you: What this means for you: If you were planning to attend the World Cup in New Jersey, it may be worth considering alternative options, such as staying in New York City or exploring other destinations.
