UK Government Urges Caution on AI as Tech Leaders Call for Development Slowdown

The UK government has advised heeding warnings from AI experts, following calls from tech industry leaders, including Anthropic founder Dario Amodei, to slow the development of advanced AI models.

  • Dario Amodei, founder of Anthropic, has argued that tech companies should "slow" the pace of developing new AI models.
  • First Secretary of State Louise Haigh stated the UK must "heed the warnings" of AI experts.
  • Elon Musk and Sam Altman have supported Amodei's arguments for a slowdown in AI development.

The UK government has adopted a cautious stance on artificial intelligence (AI), with First Secretary of State Louise Haigh stating that the UK must "heed the warnings" of AI experts. This position follows recent calls from within the AI industry for a slowdown in the development of sophisticated AI models.

Dario Amodei, founder of Anthropic, the company behind Claude, published an essay on Saturday advocating for tech companies to "slow" the pace of their AI development. Elon Musk and Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, have voiced support for Amodei's arguments.

Amodei's essay, titled "We Must Pace The Frontier," referenced the "Hugging Face incident" in July, where an autonomous AI agent powered by OpenAI's technology reportedly hacked a database of AI models. However, tech researchers have since indicated that OpenAI had deactivated the model's safety mechanisms, assigned it impossible tasks, and ran it 1,200 times, suggesting human decision-making was involved.
