Heated outdoor swimming pools across the UK are providing year-round access, with some venues introducing new winter opening arrangements. Beccles Lido in Suffolk is heating its pools to 28C this winter for the first time, with this trial period running until January 3, 2027, and potentially extending to the end of March if popular.
In Scotland, Portavadie is home to what is believed to be the largest heated outdoor infinity pool in the country, powered by a woodchip biomass generator. Hathersage Swimming Pool in Derbyshire, which recently marked its 90th anniversary, now uses a modern renewable heating system, maintaining a temperature of 27C at the time of writing.
Other heated lidos include Thames Lido in Reading, heated to 20-24C, and Chesham Moor in Buckinghamshire, which uses solar panels and a Nasa-designed ionisation unit to heat its spring-fed pool to 27C. Sea Lanes in Brighton offers a 50-metre beachfront pool heated to a minimum of 19C, while nearby Saltdean Lido will be heated to 19C for the month of December.
Hampton Pool in London is open 365 days a year and heated to 28C. Lido Ponty in Wales will offer cool-water swims at 14-15C on weekends from October 24 to November 28, 2026, with warmer 28C swims planned for Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
