UK heatwave ends as temperatures set to drop by up to 15 degrees Celsius

The fifth widespread heatwave of the year in the UK is ending, with temperatures expected to fall significantly over the weekend, bringing them closer to seasonal averages.

  • Temperatures are forecast to drop by 10-15 degrees Celsius by the end of the weekend.
  • Friday marked the 39th day this year where temperatures reached 30C or higher somewhere in the UK.
  • Three occasions in 2026 have seen temperatures of 37C or more, out of only nine times since records began.

The UK's fifth widespread heatwave of 2026 is coming to an end, with noticeably cooler conditions expected across Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures are set to fall by 10-15 degrees Celsius by the end of the weekend, bringing them closer to the seasonal average for mid-August.

This change in weather pattern, driven by a cold front moving south-eastwards, will also increase the chance of rain, including in areas currently experiencing drought. While some parts of south-east England may still reach 27 or 28 Celsius on Saturday, many areas will be 10-13 degrees Celsius cooler than on Thursday.

Most of the UK, excluding the south-east, is forecast to see highs of 16-24C. These values are typical for mid-August, though they may feel cool after the recent extreme heat. Most areas are expected to be dry with sunny spells, with a few showers possible in north-west Scotland and East Anglia.

Forecasts suggest that this cooler, more changeable weather will continue for the rest of August. While warmer spells cannot be ruled out, particularly in the south, further heatwaves are considered unlikely this month.

Why this matters: The end of the heatwave is expected to bring relief after a period of extreme heat that led to wildfires, transport delays, and an increase in heat-related deaths.
