The UK is bracing for potentially record-breaking temperatures as the Met Office issues a severe weather warning for intense heatwaves, with sweltering highs of 45C forecasted in some areas. The warning will be in place from 12pm on Friday, 23 June, until 10pm on Sunday, 25 June.
The Met Office has issued separate warnings for each region in the UK, with England facing the brunt of the heat, where temperatures are expected to reach 42C in the south and 38C in the north. Scotland's central and southern regions will also be severely affected, with temperatures set to peak at 40C.
Residents across the country have been warned to take precautions to stay safe, especially the vulnerable and elderly. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, and checking on friends and family who may struggle to cope with the heat.
The Met Office has provided guidance on how to beat the heat, including keeping windows and doors closed during the hottest part of the day, using cooling devices such as fans and air conditioning, and taking regular breaks in shaded areas. With widespread disruption expected, traffic congestion, power outages, and hospital admissions are also anticipated.
